This banding session at Ft. Fisher Air Force Recreation Center was scheduled for the early morning hours. Dr. Rotenberg was by himself when my husband and I arrived to assist with the banding, but he already had captured over a half-dozen Painted Buntings for banding. I immediately got to work as his scribe, writing down the measurements as he called them out, and choosing band colors for the newly banded PBs. My husband picked up the binoculars and reported that there were more PBs in the feeder trap. After getting those PBs out, we left the trap door open so that the birds could move around freely while we were banding the ones already waiting. The weather was very overcast and threatened rain, so we weren’t sure how long the banding session would last. Usually, our banding sessions are 5 hours long, but if it rains heavily or prolonged, the session will get cut short. We were able to capture an unbanded adult male Painted Bunting and get him banded before the rain started coming down.
